Campaigners in Battersea, south London, are holding a public meeting to oppose Wandsworth council’s plans to evict the family of Daniel Sartain-Clarke from their council flat.

 
Daniel was arrested during the riots in August. Wandsworth council has informed his mother and eight year old sister that they will face eviction if he is convicted.

This will be a test case for housing law. A number of other local authorities have indicated that they want to evict rioters’ families from council housing.

John Clossick has been leafleting Daniel’s estate to build for the meeting. “People say different things about the riots—but they still sign our petition,” he told Socialist Worker. “The vast majority of people see this as an unfair double punishment.”

The public meeting has been called by Wandsworth Against Cuts with the support of Wandsworth Trades Council and Defend Council Housing.

Speakers include Austin Mitchell MP, John McDonnell MP, Eileen Short from Defend Council Housing, Emma Norton from Liberty and Chaz Singh from the Education Activist Network.
