Who Killed Blair Peach?

About Us

About the campaign

Defend the Right to Protest was launched in response to violent police tactics and arrests at the student protests of November and December 2010, with the support of activists, MPs, trade unionists, student groups and others. We campaign against police brutality, kettling and the use of violence against those who have a right to protest. We campaign to defend all those protestors who have been arrested, bailed or charged and are fighting to clear their names.

The Inquest into Mark Duggan’s death is now entering the final stages. From Tuesday 3rd December, final witness evidence will be heard from the IPCC and police officers followed by summaries. trentonDefend Trenton Oldfield against deportation – all out for the hearing, Monday 9th Dec, Taylor House

Over 5000 have signed the petition against the deportation of Trenton, with many public figures expressing support including writing character references. We now have just over a week to mount support for Trenton. What can you do? Sign and circulate the petition:http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/theresa-may-home-office-stop-the-deportation-of-trenton-oldfield. Write to Theresa May demanding she withdraw the threat of deportation at mayt@parliament.uk

If you would like to attend the tribunal to support Deepa, Trenton & their daughter please join us on Monday 09th Decemember 2013 at Taylor House, Immigration and Asylum Chamber, 88 Rosebery Avenue, London EC1R 4QU.

Stand up to attacks on Protest on campus: Over the last couple weeks we have seen fresh attacks on the right to protest on campus. These include the arrest of ULU President Michael Chessum (http://www.independent.co.uk/student/news/students-outraged-as-ulu-president-michael-chessum-arrested-in-attack-on-the-right-to-protest-8940329.html) attempts by Birmingham University management to impose a year long injunction against occupation protest see: http://www.defendtherighttoprotest.org/birmingham-uni-students-resist-attacks-on-right-to-protest/ and the recent revelations about spying in Cambridge (see response here: http://www.defendtherighttoprotest.org/speaking-out-against-the-criminalisation-of-cambridge-students/ )

This weeks successful strike action by 3COSAS staff (one of the groups clearly targeted by the ULU protest ban), important concessions won by B’ham students in court, and the reoccupation of Sussex University  this week against privatisation (site of the protest ban last academic year), show these attacks can be taken on.  We will be launching a campaign around these issues. In the meantime please add your name to the open letter launched by staff and students against the victimization of Michael Chessum here: http://www.defendtherighttoprotest.org/lawyers-and-lecturers-condemn-the-police-criminalisation-of-student-protest/

You can follow the B’ham Defend Education Group here http://www.defendeducationbrum.org and Sussex Occupation here:http://sussexagainstprivatization.wordpress.com

PLEASE DONATE:  DTRTP is finding itself involved in, and supporting, an increasing number of  campaigns. To do that effectively we need funds.  All of our resources come from donations at a grass roots level. Please help us by making a one off or regular donation. Every amount big or small helps. A monthly donation of £5, for example, can pay for printed materials for a major defence campaign in the course of a year. Here is a fundraising flyer which details where your money goes.  http://www.defendtherighttoprotest.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/dtrtp-financial-appeal-A5-2pp-PrCa.pdf
