47 protestors were arrested for peaceful direct action against the renewal of the Trident nuclear warfare system today.
For 4 hours protestors chaining themselves to gates, successfully blockading the entrances to Faslane Naval Base, West of Glasgow, where the Trident submarines are housed. After cutting them from the gates police proceeded to arrest the protestors, some of whom were over 80 years old.
The group, Scrap Trident Coalition, are campaigning for the abolition of all nuclear arms, starting with Scotland, with a whole week of protest in Glasgow and Faslane.
Trident is estimated to cost £100 billion over the next 50 years and £1.73 trillion annually over the next decade.
DTRTP sends its solidarity to those arrested, as well as to all the protestors who took direct action. Scrap Trident Coalition members remain hopeful that the arrests won’t lead to charges. If the police do attempt to press charges DTRTP will be sure to mobilise support.
